Vandals deface historic Manitou caves

Using sledgehammers to break in and hundreds of feet of fishing line to help them remember the way out, vandals have been busting into a series of caves near Cave of the Winds in Manitou Springs.

Once inside, they have been spray painting cavern walls, an act that could stunt the growth of unusual rock formations and upset the ecological balance for centuries to come.

They also could be jeopardizing future expeditions into the caves, said Ryan Brown, assistant manager of Cave of the Winds, one of the region's top tourist draws.

"These caves are like churches; they're beautiful," Brown said. ...
