Bubonic plague found in feral cat/ Health Department suggests taking precautions

The body of a feral cat found in western El Paso County tested positive for bubonic plague, the county Health Department reported Friday.

The cat was found in prime rock-squirrel habitat and later died, said Larry Schaad of the Health Department. Plague is endemic in the wild rodent population along the Front Range, meaning it is routinely present at a low level.

"No people are sick, and no other animals are sick," Schaad said. People who came in contact with the cat were given medication, he said.
