When a yearling black bear wandered into downtown Manitou Springs on Monday, it was quickly surrounded by dozens of camera-toting tourists trying to get close enough to pet it.

The bear got scared and climbed a tree, but it could just as easily have gotten spooked and hurt a gawking onlooker, said Trina Lynch of the Colorado Division of Wildlife.

"People grow up with teddy bears, and so they tend to have a lack of respect for live bears," Lynch said. "People need to remember that they are wild animals and they can hurt you. Wild animals may react in a way people are not expecting."
