The Pueblo City-County Health Department is warning that bubonic plague has resurfaced amid prairie dogs in Pueblo West.

Last summer, the plague was blamed for the deaths of tens of thousands of prairie dogs in Pueblo West. A couple of thousand prairie dogs are believed dead in the latest outbreak, which is in an area more heavily populated with humans in Pueblo West than the area affected last year.

Plague commonly is spread through bites from infected fleas. Fleas in the area of the prairie-dog die-off were collected by Pueblo Health Department staff on May 3 and sent to the Centers for ...
