Down to the wire/USA volleyball holds off Germany in five sets

The last time the United States men's volleyball team played, it was swept by Brazil, losing both matches in six straight games.

So the U.S. team needed a Germany. Or so it thought.

Germany, 0-8 in World League play entering Saturday's game with the U.S., had other ideas. On a night when the Colorado Avalanche won the Stanley Cup in Denver, it was the U.S. team that at times looked like it was playing on ice.

The U.S. started strong, then hung on for dear life against Germany, 25-20, 25-23, 23-25, 22-25, 15-12 at World Arena. The win, combined with the Netherlands' loss to Brazil, moved the ...
