Mind Over Muscle/ Athletes look to sports psychology to increase their edge

Tara Nott's golden performance in weightlifting at last year's Sydney Olympics was a triumph of both physical and mental strength.

"Weightlifting is a very mental sport," says Nott, the first American to win Olympic weightlifting gold in 40 years. "If you don't believe you can lift the weight, even if you are strong enough, you probably aren't going to lift the weight."

Nott, in snatches of conversation between lifts at the U.S. Olympic Complex in Colorado Springs, talks enthusiastically about the benefits of sports psychology, about the mental training that helped pave her road to gold. ...
