Carving a niche with virtual fish; Woodland Park artist becomes nationally known for his art, taxidermy

It can be lonely at the top, especially at the peak of a craft
that pays little money or that few know about.
Cyril Smith III is one of the world's best at creating realistic-
looking fish from wood or bringing a fish back to still life through
taxidermy.
This month, Smith, a 40-year-old artist from Woodland Park, won
three prestigious awards at the 2001 World Fish Carving & Taxidermy
Championships in Springfield, Ill.
It was the first time he'd entered a wood-carving contest. Judges
