Fools are right at home in TV, movies

The Gazette | April 1, 2001| | Copyright

There's a fine distinction between an idiot and a fool. Here are a couple of illustrations that make the difference clear:

Ralph Kramden was an idiot. Ed Norton was a fool.

Skipper was an idiot. Gilligan was a fool.

None of these classic TV characters needs to rush off to a MENSA meeting. But the fools have an innocence about them that somehow shields them from harm.

It's the reason a jester could call the king an idiot with immunity, while dumb noblemen, trying the same feat, quickly found they had no further use of their hats.

TV and movies have a rich tradition of honoring the fool.
