SALT LAKE CITY - The Mormon church, an American-born faith that has become one of the world's most successful new religious movements, is about to come under some of the greatest scrutiny of its colorful 170-year history.

A year from now, the 2002 Winter Olympics will bring 2 million spectators and 9,000 media representatives to the church's home in this city framed by the Wasatch Mountains.
