Laughter, tears/ Opera Theatre of the Rockies offers two views of death

In opera, death is in the hands of the composer.

Giacomo Puccini made it funny in "Gianni Schicchi," depicting a family scheming to change a relative's will. Ruggiero Leoncavallo took a tragic take on it in "Pagliacci," a tale of jealousy and murder.

Opera Theatre of the Rockies is presenting these one-act operas together this weekend at Colorado College's Armstrong Hall - an evening the opera company is billing a "laugh until you cry" experience.

The Italian operas, which the Denver-based Opera Colorado also paired in 1998, present death from two very different perspectives.
