At dusk the sun has a way of slowly outlining the dunes near Great Sand Dunes National Monument like a burning, neon fuse.

For a few moments, that low glow transforms the sandy surface into the illusion of a midsummer glassy pond. As the sunset show continues, you see the "blood" dripping slowly down the sides of the Sangre de Cristo mountains in the background.

You marvel at the vast curves and endless drifts of sand and wonder who could fashion this. No matter what your religion, you have to conclude this place is a gift given by someone with a great sense of humor, variety and style.
