Jubilee Day commemorates the passage of black Americans from slavery to freedom when Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation on Jan. 1, 1863.

That's why the Colorado Springs branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, and black people across the nation, invite the community to celebrate Jubilee Day every New Year's Day.

Jubilee 2001 is scheduled from noon to 1:30 p.m. Monday at Antioch Baptist Church, 3310 Van Teylingen Drive. The event will feature special music, food, speakers and preaching on the theme, "Remembering the forfeiture for freedom."
