He was a 13th-century Italian known for being gentle and humble. He considered animals his brothers and sisters. He was an environmentalist before there was such a thing.

And, the pope agrees, he's a good match for Colorado.

The state's three bishops announced Tuesday that Pope John Paul II has approved their request to name St. Francis of Assisi the patron saint of Colorado.

In Catholic tradition, a patron is a saint venerated as a special intercessor before God.
