On llama time/ To get the most from backpacking with these South American creatures, you have to learn to go at their pace

To a llama, especially a young one, a stream crossing is a big deal. So when four llamas, including Sonny Boy Meadows, a shaggy milk- chocolate-colored youngster, started their trek in the Buffalo Peaks Wilderness Area with a sprint across a rocky, ankle-deep stream, it was wet and wild.

But things soon settled down for the animals and the 10 people who hiked with them. The weekend hikers were soon walking, discovering, existing, on llama time - stopping to smell the flowers, browse through the pine branches, grab a stalk of grass, ponder yet another stream crossing.
