Monument arch divides town

It's hardly St. Louis' Gateway to the West, but for nearly eight years, the little arch over Third Street in Monument has served as a small-town landmark, a gateway to downtown.

But now town officials have proposed taking it down to accommodate new turn lanes into the new post office's parking lot.

Third Street, which was a two-lane road, was recently widened to three lanes to accommodate traffic turning into the new post office. That sent vehicles closer to the arch's lower sections, said Town Manager Rick Sonnenburg.

"Witnesses have seen trucks hit the arch," Sonnenburg said.
