Like all humans, late 20th-century Americans cannot live without
air. Yet there is evidence to suggest a fundamental difference: Homo
americanus, circa 1999, may not be able to live without conditioned
air.

dependence on an atmosphere of airlike gases treated by machine has
been increasing year by year since the end of World War II. Seventy-
