Backyard bird count helps ensure survival of species
|
It's too bad for the Passenger Pigeon that the Internet didn't
arrive sooner.
The pigeon species became extinct in the wild by the turn of the
last century, but few people even knew.
Today, if a species begins to decline, the Internet might help it
survive, through the Great Backyard Bird Count.
The event, Friday through Monday, is sponsored by the Cornell Lab
of Ornithology and the National Audubon Society. People throughout
North America are being asked to help scientists document the
abundance and distribution of the winter bird populations at the
start of the first spring migration.
