Perhaps the problem lies in the juxtaposition of the words:

Stumps and $1 million.

The 35-million-year old tree stumps, as ragged and stained as neglected teeth, are the centerpiece of Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument. In their prime, they were majestic redwoods forming a canopy hundreds of feet above the floor of the lush Florissant Valley, thick with insects, fish, small mammals, cedars, pine, maple and oak.
