The word "pastel" conjures images of soft, pale shades.
It's a misnomer. In fact, pastel colors often are incredibly rich
and vibrant. Pastel is nearly pure pigment - the same pigments used
in oil paint - with just enough binder to hold it together.
But around the end of the 19th century, probably because of the
ready availability of cheap, pigment-starved pastels, the word began
to take on its modern meaning.
The new Pikes Peak Pastel Society hopes to put the myth of pastel
paleness to rest. The 15-member group, founded in January, showcases
