Has Coke gone flat? Has Gillette lost its edge?

The stock of Coca-Cola Co. (symbol: KO), which had raced, with barely a pause to refresh, from $20 in the summer of 1994 to $87 in the summer of 1998, closed Friday at $60.75--a decline of nearly 30 percent in seven months, while the market as a whole was rising 17 percent.

Meanwhile, Gillette Co. (G) was having similar troubles, plunging from $65.25 in late March to $50 last week--a drop of nearly one- fourth. Its stock closed Friday at $52.25. Coke and Gillette have a lot in common. They were started in the late 19th century and have benefited ...
