Aging memorial slated for facelift/ $40 million sought for Mount Rushmore

MOUNT RUSHMORE NATIONAL MEMORIAL, S.D. - Mount Rushmore National Memorial, the nation's Shrine of Democracy, turns 50 next year, and the Fourth of July will be the kickoff for extensive work at the mountain carving.

President Bush has been invited, and comedian Bob Hope is the honorary chairman of the celebration.

Mount Rushmore, a granite mountain featuring the sculpted likenesses of George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson and Theodore Roosevelt, is in the Black Hills about 20 miles south of Rapid City. Sculptor Gutzon Borglum's crew completed work on it in 1941.
