Joe White is using one of business' oldest practices to fill rooms at the Historic Manitou Spa.

For White, part-owner of the 14-room bed and breakfast in Manitou Springs, bartering has meant one or two less vacancies every month.

As a member of ITEX of Colorado Springs Inc., White accepts "trade dollars" for his rooms. He can spend them on any product or service offered by ITEX's 10,000 member businesses nationwide, including 150 in the Colorado Springs area.

"We have income we wouldn't have otherwise," White said.
