Gina Solazzi admits she couldn't live without fresh basil and a good olive oil.

Both are essential ingredients in pesto, a sauce made of fresh basil, olive oil and Parmesan cheese, says Solazzi, owner of Pasta di Solazzi, an Italian specialty foods store.

"It takes very little to make a good pesto if you use good ingredients," says Solazzi. "Use the best ingredients you can afford." She considers a generous amount of fresh basil and a good olive oil essential.
