County's jobless rate declines/ Employment grows by 2.3 percent; pace quicker than was predicted

El Paso County's unemployment rate plunged to 5.8 percent in
January, the lowest level in 4 1/2 years.
Statistics released Thursday by the state Department of Labor
and Employment also show that county employment grew by 2.3 percent
in 1989. That pace was quicker than economists had predicted for
the year.
January's jobless rate, adjusted to account for seasonal
factors, was more than a full point less than December's 6.9 percent
