Shamrocks and stout aside, the Irish celebrate an amazing saint
on the March 17 feast day of Sucat - or Patrick - the priest who
evangelized the Emerald Isle.
Sucat was born about A.D. 385 at Bannavem on the west coast of
Britain, possibly near the modern city of Dumbarton, Scotland. The
son of Calpurnius, a deacon in the church and a Roman magistrate,
Sucat's Latin name was Patricius - or Patrick.
Despite his family's Christianity, it took his enslavement,
beginning at age 16, to turn Patrick's heart to God.
