If the Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Plant operates an additional 20 years, it will have a small impact on some aspects of the Southern Maryland environment but not enough to justify a refusal of its request for a license renewal, according to an initial study by the federal government.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission, which presented a draft environmental impact study Tuesday at a public meeting in Solomons, is trying to determine whether Maryland's only nuclear plant can operate safely past its initial 40-year lifespan and with little harm to the environment.
