Zhu Ready To Face Critics on U.S. Trip

When Gordon Smith, a Republican senator from Oregon, met Premier
Zhu Rongji last Wednesday, the 71-year-old Chinese leader confided
that he was concerned he would return from the United States covered
in rotten tomatoes and eggs.
Smith encouraged Zhu to go anyway and confront his U.S. critics.
"I told him there will be a heck of a stage for him to speak to
the American people about where he's trying to take China, and how we
can resolve our differences," he said.
