The Easter Rising
|
Hoping to take advantage of Britain's involvement in World War I,
a group of Irish republicans seeking independence started a rebellion
on Easter Monday, 1916. After a week of fierce fighting, British
troops defeated the separatists. One of the republican leaders, Sir
Roger Casement, had hoped to win German support for the cause, but
was unsuccessful. Without German participation, the revolt was
doomed. Eager to avert disaster, Casement tried to halt the
rebellion by sailing to Ireland on a German submarine. He was
captured upon arrival and later executed with 14 other rebel leaders.
