Last August, accountant Jesse Steinmetz did some back-of-the-
envelope calculations: buying and fixing up a tiny Milwaukee house
would be profitable only if he did the work himself.
So he and a partner bought the house for $75,000.
They gutted "almost the whole thing," spending $7,000 to install
a new kitchen, cabinets, flooring, carpet, paint, and water heater.
An electrician friend wired new outlets and light fixtures into a
system already supported by circuit breakers.
