It was January 1848 when the glint of yellow metal was first spied
in a ditch near John Sutter's California sawmill. Money in the
street! It was mankind's oldest dream. And the gold rush was on.
Just days later, California (along with all of Texas and New
Mexico) became part of the United States, ceded by a vanquished
Mexico at the end of a bloody war. Any American with a pick and
shovel could now stake a claim in California, own land, mine gold and
keep what he found. Maybe.
The lure proved irresistible. And within months, the cry of
"Eureka!" and "Gold! Gold! Gold on the American River!" was ...
