Half Price Books' road to success doesn't follow the book

HOUSTON -- When Half Price Books started out in Dallas, it was the
very picture of a business built on a shoestring.
The initial kitty was a measly $4,000. The location was an old
laundry. Much of the inventory was purchased from a used bookstore
that, perhaps ominously, had gone out of business. The first
employees were the daughters of co-founder Pat Anderson. Thirteen-
