It remains to be seen whether the Gar-Field girls basketball team can repeat as state champions, but last night it showed this much: The returning members from last year's run learned how important a strong start can be in playoff games.

Hosting North Stafford in last night's Northwestern Region quarterfinal, senior point guard Sarah Jansen and junior forward Kia Manuel each scored nine points in the first quarter, and Gar-Field never looked back, cruising to a 69-43 victory. The Indians (20-4) missed just three of their 13 shots while building a 25-8 lead in the first eight minutes. ...
