Compaq goes after new market with purchase of Tandem
|
NEW YORK (AP) -- Compaq Computer Corp., the world's biggest maker
of personal computers, is buying Tandem Computers Inc. in a $3
billion stock deal that boosts Compaq's bid to spread beyond PCs into
more powerful business machines.
More broadly, Compaq's acquisition speeds up an industry drive to
change the way big businesses handle their heaviest-duty computing,
such as tracking inventories or millions of bank transactions.
Compaq plans to use Tandem's specialized software in networked
