Car owners face Freon shock

HOUSTON -- When Oscar Arce tells potential customers what it will cost to fill their automobile's ailing air conditioner with Freon, they "hop into the car and take off," he says.

But they usually return to Arce's air conditioning shop in a day or two after finding that other places around town charge similarly high prices.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, at least 30 million U.S. car owners have air conditioners designed to operate with dwindling supplies of Freon. The refrigerant, also known as R- 12, can no longer be manufactured in the United States or imported, because it ...
