KEYSTONE, S.D. -- There were many skeptics when Gutzon Borglum
first announced plans to carve a national monument from a mountain in
the Black Hills.
The sculptor fought a long and hard battle against financial and
technical difficulties. There were no roads to the site and Borglum
had to overcome critics to the idea of sculpting with dynamite.
But what Borglum created at Mount Rushmore has become one of
