Savings Loans to Enjoy Record Profits This Year

WASHINGTON (AP) _ The top regulator of the nation's savings and loans predicted on Monday the thrift industry would experience record profits this year.

Timothy Ryan, director of the Office of Thrift Supervision, said about 2,000 savings and loans with assets of about $900 billion remain in business three years after the beginning of the government's bailout program.

"Ninetyx percent of them are profitable," he told a seminar sponsored by the National Association of Home Builders. "In fact, this year will probably end up being a record profit for the industry. The first two quarters ...
