IBM Cuts Prices on Many Personal Computers

NEW YORK (AP) _ IBM on Tuesday cut prices on many of its
personal computers by up to 30 percent, the first phase in the
computer giant's strategy to contend with an industry price war.
Meanwhile, a top IBM executive said the company had decided
not to sell clones of its PCs in the United States, although it
has taken such a step abroad.
IBM called the price cuts among its steepest ever. But some
analysts said the markdowns are late, not deep enough and may do
