There was a time, not so long ago, when those with an interest in cinematic history could read about the great silent films more easily than they could see them. With a few celebrated exceptions--the comedies of Charles Chaplin, Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd, Sergei Eisenstein's "Battleship Potemkin" and an occasional D.W.
