Willard Bascom Dies; Explored Oceans for Science, Treasures

Willard Newell Bascom, 83, a pioneer in ocean exploration who plumbed the depths for shipwrecks, diamonds and scientific treasure, died Sept. 20 at his home in La Jolla, Calif.

A family spokesman said he died as the result of complications of an infection he developed after being injured in a car accident in July.
