There are two transcendent beauties. One is cold and pure. The Christian cross shines forth its geometrical perfection. Every picture painted in obedience to the laws of linear perspective partakes of its correctness. It is impervious to time. The immortality conveyed by the Pyramids is that of the unaging triangle and square.

Crystalline serenity is one chief form of the beautiful. "Art Nouveau, 1890-1914," which goes on view today at the National Gallery of Art, is a show about the other.

Its lines aren't taut-string straight. They clutch and cling as tendrils do, bend and droop and stray. ...
