Forced Move Angers Slum Dwellers of New Delhi

Eleven years ago, Anitadevi Bharti and her new husband came to New Delhi from their impoverished village in eastern India, hoping to find money and dignity in the big city. He worked as a cobbler, she cleaned houses, and over time they raised four children.

Along with 200 other migrant families, the Bhartis built their lives in Okhla Juggi, a grimy squatters' community near an industrial zone in southern New Delhi. Their brick, thatched-roof hut was modest, but close to their work, and the family was surrounded by fellow cobblers from their home region.
