To mark the opening of its centennial year, the University of Oklahoma will be honored by the Newcomen Society of the United States. The dinner will be Dec. 19 in the Oklahoma Memorial Union and seating is limited to 400.

The Newcomen Society was founded in the United States in 1923 in New York City. Its name honors the memory and accomplishments of Thomas Newcomen (1663-1729), the pioneer British inventor whose 1712 invention was the first commercially successful steam engine.
