Maryland began emergency mosquito spraying for West Nile virus last night, while state officials planned to test a sick first- grader for the microbe and Virginia started beefing up virus surveillance along the Potomac River.

The spraying began as Maryland officials announced that the virus had just been detected in a third dead crow and area jurisdictions boosted efforts to see how far it has spread and to keep it from making people ill.
