ST. LOUIS - James R. Adams has been named president and chief executive officer of Southwestern Bell Telephone Co., succeeding John E. Hayes, Jr., who is taking early retirement at his own request.

Adams, 49, is currently president of Southwestern Bell Telephone's Texas Division.
