Saatchi plans South Bank gallery to rival Tate empire

NCHARLES SAATCHI, the multimillionaire patron whose enthusiasm for young British artists has propelled them to notoriety, is planning to use Damien Hirst's pickled shark to mount an all-out assault on the recent dominance of the Tate galleries in London's modern art world.

The shark will be the star attraction of the first exhibition at Mr Saatchi's new "museum", which he plans to open in the former GLC headquarters, County Hall.

Mr Saatchi is in discussions with English Heritage about bringing his art collection, at present in the Saatchi Gallery in Swiss Cottage, to the vacant first floor ...
