'I'm doing what I can but I feel as if I'm under a death sentence'

DEVON farmer Gary Wright set out to milk his 150-strong herd of Friesian cattle today, feeling powerless to prevent the spread of foot-and-mouth which will wreck his livelihood.

"I feel as if I am under a death sentence," he said.

Since the deadly disease was discovered in a herd just several dozen miles away, near Okehampton, he has been taking every precaution. "But it is spitting in the wind," said Mr Wright, adding: "I'm doing what I can but if it is in the air and heading your way, what difference will it make?"
