Thomas Wolfe, Abridged Too Far?; The Novelist's Acclaimed 'Look Homeward, Angel' Is Undergoing a Restoration--60,000 Words' Worth

One of the most fabled stories of American literature is the one
in which the legendary book editor Maxwell Perkins cuts 60,000 words
to sculpt the masterpiece "Look Homeward, Angel" from a messy mass of
almost unreadable manuscript pages dumped in the offices of Charles
Scribner's Sons publishing firm by Thomas Wolfe in 1928.
Turns out Perkins may have cut the good stuff.
This fall, readers will be able to decide for themselves when the
