SIR ALEXANDER FLEMING frequently used his family as guinea pigs in
his quest to develop the 20th century's miracle drug, penicillin,
according to an unpublished book by his brother that has surfaced at
auction.
"If any of us at home had a cold or any minor ailment, Alec would
have a sample," recalled Robert Fleming in the memoir he wrote for
his family in 1957.
"[He would] give it the works at the lab, produce a vaccine and
inoculate us. It was not that he thought we were really ill but we
were willing guinea pigs. I must have had my arm punctured and
