English Nature tries to rein in white horse of Folkestone

DEPUTY Prime Minister John Prescott is today being asked to intervene in a furious battle over plans to create a giant white horse on hill grassland overlooking Folkestone.

English Nature warns that the proposed figure will scar an internationally protected landscape on the North Downs, home to rare orchids and the Adonis blue butterfly.

Fears that the scheme might set a precedent for a rush of hillside designs, including another Cerne Abbas giant, were branded as "ridiculous" ...
