WE FIRST bought our house in the Dordogne because we had three
small children and wanted to create a proper second home for them. We
wanted guaranteed sunshine in July and August, and, because we are
Londoners, a really rural location where the children could
experience a completely different way of life.
To have grown up speaking the language and understanding about
French habits and the countryside has given them something special.
Now they are parents themselves they still come back every year,
bringing their families. This year, my grandchildren are spending the
